An
Alarm for Christmas
I
love to work! I have always loved to
work and keep busy. From my earliest
memories, I was continually involved in some sort of project. I enjoyed carrying wood for our wood-burning
cook stove, getting up before dawn to get the cows for their morning
milking,
and carrying water from the spring. I
liked feeding hay to the cows and sheep and loved bottle-feeding their
calves
and lambs. There was never a shortage of
chores on our farm in beautiful McDonald County, Missouri, and I
eagerly
embraced each task. My favorite
activities were always the outside ones, and I tried to avoid any job
that kept
me inside. Any- thing that involved the
tractor was a treat for me; and I didn’t like to play with dolls,
especially
paper dolls (I’ll tell you about that some other time!).
Now, all of these years later, I can still
milk a cow -- but don’t ask me to bake a pie!
A few days before my father passed away, he told me a story that I had never heard before: He said that when I was little (probably five or six years old), I requested an alarm clock for Christmas, “so I could get up earlier and get more work done”! Doesn’t sound like your typical kid, does it? I hope that this piece with an alarm clock will cause you to recall the story of the little red-headed McDonald County farm girl who only wanted an alarm clock for Christmas and has never outgrown her love of working. |

This peaceful little
church reminds
me of my
childhood in beautiful Like my
Mother before me, I walked to Poplar
Hill, a one-room country school which also served as our church. In the rural area between Powell and Cyclone,
Poplar Hill was the gathering place for many community events and the
center
for most social affairs. Within the
walls of this church/school are some of my dearest memories and I could

the pages of a book with my cherished recollections of those long-ago
days. I also
have
fond memories of walking to a
one-room church/school near Powell for I loved
hearing the Bible stories and learning
about the Bible heroes who displayed great courage
and faith. They made my brave crossing
of the swinging bridge seem “almost” trivial. By
the end of the day, the boys, who also attended |
